About
Street Roots is celebrating 10 years of education, dialogue, and independence through the newspaper, vendor program, advocacy and the Rose City Resource Guide.
Vendor Program: In 2009, Street Roots has helped more than 30 vendors on the streets become housed through providing stability and income through the sales of the newspaper. We’ve also empowered more than 250 individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty to improve their quality of life through the sales of the newspaper.
Vendors purchase Street Roots for 25 cents and sell the newspaper for $1 in the community. Currently, Street Roots has nearly 60-80 vendors selling the newspaper throughout the Portland region.
Advocacy: In 2009, Street Roots spearheaded hard fought battles for housing assistance for 300 people in NW Oregon through our advocacy and reporting, while leading the way to secure millions of dollars in homeless services for the City of Portland.
We also led critical discussions both through the newspaper and with the general public about the civil rights of people experiencing homelessness, while incorporating the voices of a wide range of voices throughout our community.
Alternative Media: Street Roots has told the quality of the newspaper is at an all time high and that vendors are a leading example in the community about how the broader public and people on the streets can build and maintain quality relationships. In the past year, Street Roots has produced in-depth reporting on the Cambodian, Latino, and African communities in Portland, while covering broader issues affecting us all from the environment to civil rights.
The Rose City Resource is a publication of Street Roots and is the most comprehensive, updated list of services for people experiencing homelessness and poverty in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties. Link: http://www.rosecityresource.org/
